Waste management problem has raised a huge attention from many authorities. Besides that, non-renewable energy depletion caused awareness to the society on curbing the issue. Due to these current issues, biogas production from solid waste was introduced. In this work the method to produce the biogas was anaerobic digestion. It is a digestion process of organic wastes without the presence of oxygen. A lab scale anaerobic digester for batch mode was built. Methane production from solid waste specifically food waste (green waste, kitchen waste etc.) was done. The digestion process was done by the aid of inoculum which was cow dung as the amount of micro-organisms is high. A 350 liters plastic container of height 90 cm and diameter 70 cm was used as a bio-digester and biogas was collected in tyre tubes. Methane tank was filled up to 70% of volume by organic wastes. Methane production was monitored daily and in detail on weekly basis. It was found that using a mixture of cow dung and food waste retention period was 21 days. Gas started to produce on 7th day. Amount of biogas obtained was 136 dm3. This biogas digester may be used domestically as well as for the demonstrative purposes.

Energy is most important for economic growth and human development. Every day, we come across food, vegetable wastes and other organic wastes that have huge potential to uplift the society in a better way, when these are transformed into useful bioenergy. To produce bioenergy from biomass one of the better options is to utilize these potential wastes to transform it into biogas. Today, the entire world is looking for different alternative fuels. Biogas is one of the good alternative fuels, energy rich and is well suited as domestic fuel, for heating purposes and power generation. The sources available for the production of biogas are fruit, vegetable wastes and agricultural residues. Biogas from such solid wastes primarily constitutes of methane, carbon dioxide and other trace gases. It is a clean fuel with a calorific value between 5000 to 5500 kcal/kg. There are two methods available for the production of biogas from organic wastes (Dry and Wet Processes). The dry processes include combustion and pyrolysis, whereas the wet processes include anaerobic digestion, gasification and fermentation. This book will be especially useful for Chemical, Mechanical & Agricultural Engineers.

This book presents the state of the art in biogas production using anaerobic digestion technology, with an emphasis on waste utilization/valorization. Offering a comprehensive reference guide to biogas production from different waste streams, it covers various aspects of anaerobic digestion technology from the basics, i.e., microbiological aspects to prominent parameters governing biogas production systems, as well as major principles of their operation, analysis, process control, and troubleshooting. Written and edited by internationally recognized experts in the field of biogas production from both academia and industry, it provides in-depth and cutting-edge information on central developments in the field. In addition, it discusses and reviews major issues affecting biogas production, including the type of feedstock, pretreatment techniques, production systems, design and fabrication of biogas plants, as well as biogas purification and upgrading technologies. 'Biogas: Fundamentals, Process, and Operation' also addresses the application of advanced environmental and energy evaluation tools including life cycle assessment (LCA), exergy, techno-economics, and modeling techniques.

Energy is a vital commodity. As the fossil fuel resources are limited and their demand is high, the energy gap can be met with the energy generation from renewable resources. Bio-energy generated from diversified sources provides local and emerging opportunities to reduce the over dependence on fossil fuels. Renewable energy from biomass is one of the most efficient and effective options among various other alternative sources of energy currently available. The anaerobic digestion of biomass requires less capital investment and per unit production cost as compared to other renewable energy sources such as hydro, solar and wind. Further, renewable energy from biomass is available as a domestic resource in the rural areas, which is not subject to world price fluctuations or the supply uncertainties as of imported and conventional fuels. Keeping in view the importance of biomass conversion into biogas, the book reports a methodology for maximising the biogas yield from the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a biological process in which biodegradable organic matters are broken-down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen into biogas, which consists of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and trace amount of other gases. AD typically converts the organic waste into biogas at an increasing rate for the first two weeks where the rate of conversion is constant until the organic source is consumed. AD is widely used to treat wastewater sludge and organic waste. Some of the advantages of applying AD are it s a renewable source of energy, reduces the emission of landfill gases and the nutrient rich solids left after digestion can be used as an organic soil amendment. AD is increasingly used as a technology that can deal with mixed organic waste streams (e.g. animal slurry, sewage, BMW, food processing wastes). The fibrous component of the digestate can be used as a soil improver or further composted to achieve a compost material suitable for horticultural, land reclamation and agricultural applications.
