Assessing the Economic Aspects of Biogas Plants

Energy crisis has become one of the most concerning issues throughout the world including emerging developing country like Bangladesh. Scientific community has unequivocally agreed that renewable energy is the only solution to face this challenge. A number of researches on renewable energy (e.g., solar, wind, hydor energy & biogas) have been carried out in Bangladesh. So far, biogas and solar energy has been proved to be the best alternative to meet the daily energy demand. However, Bangladesh could achieve more success with biogas in rural areas if socioeconomic, technical and regulatory issues were addressed appropriately. This study analyzed not only these factors but also (i) the present situation of the biogas production, (ii) ways to improve the efficiency and economic benefits of small-scale or farm-scale biogas production, (iii) existing problem associated with small-scale/farms-scale biogas production, (iv) reason behind not using and not using of biogas by the people nearby the user of biogas, (v) economic benefits of small biogas plants and (vi) the ways to improve efficiency by intervening feed stock quality and composition of the small-scale/farms-scale biogas plants.

This study examined socio-economic impact of the biogas technology in Tanzania with the view to enhance gender involvement into the renewable energy technologies. The objectives were to assess costs and financing modalities, community awareness on benefits, biogas user's satisfactions and the general challenges with regard to the technology. Data collection was through formal questionnaire survey to 210 biogas users across the programme areas which cover 28 districts in 10 regions of the Tanzania Mainland. Analytical techniques used in the study include descriptive methods such as cross tabulations, means, percentages, frequencies and standard deviation. Cost for the biogas installation was found to be independent of the household income level and the financing modalities were through the subsidy provided by the programme, own equity, support from friends and relatives, churches and borrowing from financial institutions. The technology was made available to the community through programme staff, religious organizations, NGOs, mason/company and the media.

Declining viability of biogas production followed by a stagnation of dissemination of biogas plants calls for new repowering measures as increased amounts of storable energy sources from biomass are required for providing a smooth integration of fluctuating renewable energy sources in the electricity market in future.The implementation of biogas microgrid concepts as a repowering measure allows for a combination of organizational and technological efficiency increase as a result of decoupling of biogas production from utilization.The first objective of the present work is the development of a tool for techno-economic assessment of biogas microgrid configurations .The second objective of the work is the application of the tool for assessing the concepts’ potential for efficiency increase based on its unique features: gas storage and gas transport. These features were assessed for the two most promising biogas utilization pathways being bio-methane production and flexible electricity generation from biogas.The tool is an Excel© based model where biogas microgrid relevant processes such as drying, desulphurization, compression but also the upward and downward processes of biogas production such as biomass transport and electricity generation/methanization are described with mathematical-physical equations. Based on the latter, calculations related to energetic performance and storage capacity are preformed. The economic assessment is based on the annuity method .The fixed costs of the biogas microgrid components are expressed as functions of scale (capacity).The techno-economic calculations are preformed in three modules. The modularity of the tool allows for flexible adjustment of selected biogas microgrid configurations to various local conditions. Consequently the configuration can vary in following parameters: (a) length, (b) substrate type, (c) number and (d) capacity of connected biogas plants, (e) grid structure and (f) biogas utilization pathway.

The importance of renewable fuel production has become significant in terms of supplying energy carriers for the transportation sector and storing electricity over ows from intermittent sources. The purpose of this book is to address, model and assess economics of methanol production schemes from a biogas origin. It is envisioned that the establishment of this biomass-to-liquid process will enhance biogas production. The enhancement is based on creating an alternative utilization method of biogas than combustion for CHP. The benefits from the establishment are projected to be a reduction in GHG-emissions from livestock waste and a biofuel contributor to renewable liquid energy carriers. A farm and a central large scale scenario are investigated. The production scheme assessed is based on biogas from degassed bio-waste and a biogas reforming technology. A Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell is adapted to the process schemes, partly to improve composition of reactants for methanol synthesis and to act as a peak shaving mechanism for the electricity overflows. A heat integration and economic assessment is established and subjected to a cost-optimization estimating methanol production prices.

However, the variable power generation of these renewable sources will lead to an increased need of flexible power producers in order to balance differences between energy generation and consumption. Among the different types of RE sources, biogas plants have the advantage that their input biomass and the produced biogas can be stored and electricity can consequently be generated on demand. Since electricity from biogas has not been used to balance fluctuations of intermittent RE in the past, new concepts are required. These concepts should be able to meet the requirements of highly renewable electricity systems and to supply biogas according to the varying demand for long-and short-term balance power generation. In this regard, this thesis focused on the identification of biogas plant concepts for flexible power generation, as well as on ranking them regarding their economic and life cycle performance.
