The study focuses on production of biogas as an alternative energy by using biodegradable kitchen wastes of Kathmandu University Premises. The research was conducted on modified ARTI model compact biogas plant of 1 m3 digester and 0.75 m3 gasholder in focusing the management of daily average collected biodegradable wastes produced from households. The main objective of the project is biogas generation and analysis the feasibility, working efficiency, health and environmental benefits of modified ARTI compact biogas plant in urban areas. The system will provide an appropriate and most efficient solution to the problem of kitchen waste enabling the recovery of energy from waste.

Addis Ababa is one of the fastest growing cities where high urbanization becomes a challenge. Consequently housing shortage is a big problem of the city. The municipality has launched a huge Condominium Housing Programme in response to the housing problems. However, sanitary wastewater and solid waste management s are the critical problems to those houses. Thus, sanitary wastewater and kitchen organic solid wastes generated from condominium residences were collected and evaluated for its biogas production and fertilizer potential in order to solve the foreseen waste management problems. The physicochemical characteristics of the collected wastes were determined. A laboratory scale batch anaerobic co-digestion of both wastes with different mix ratio of 100% SWW: 0%KSW , 75%SWW: 25%KSW, 50%SSW: 50%KSW, 25%SWW: 75%KSW and 0%SWW: 100%KSW were carried out at ambient temperature for 30 days. Experimental results shows that the different metal ions and heavy metals expected in condominium house sanitary wastewater are within tolerable limits for anaerobic microorganisms. The highest total biogas yields were obtained from 25%SWW:75%KSW which is 65.6liter.

Unscientific land filling of municipal solid wastes is one of the important causes for environmental degradation and in a big way contribute to global warming. Households constitute the most basic unit in urban energy consumption and waste generation. Under this scenario, conversion of domestic organic waste into a green fuel, using biogas technology has a huge scope for mitigation of Green House Gas emissions. Like the conventional biogas plants, the portable biogas plants were not so far studied and evaluated extensively. Considering the high relevance of the portable domestic biogas plants, four types of portable biogas plants viz. Floating gas holder type without water seal, Floating gas holder type with water seal, Fixed gas holder type and KAU Portable split biogas plant were evaluated in the present study. Waste management problem has raised a huge attention from many authorities. Besides that, non-renewable energy depletion caused awareness to the society on curbing the issue. Due to these current issues, biogas production from solid waste was introduced. In this work the method to produce the biogas was anaerobic digestion. It is a digestion process of organic wastes without the presence of oxygen. A lab scale anaerobic digester for batch mode was built. Methane production from solid waste specifically food waste (green waste, kitchen waste etc.) was done. The digestion process was done by the aid of inoculum which was cow dung as the amount of micro-organisms is high. A 350 liters plastic container of height 90 cm and diameter 70 cm was used as a bio-digester and biogas was collected in tyre tubes. Methane tank was filled up to 70% of volume by organic wastes. Methane production was monitored daily and in detail on weekly basis. It was found that using a mixture of cow dung and food waste retention period was 21 days. Gas started to produce on 7th day. Amount of biogas obtained was 136 dm3. This biogas digester may be used domestically as well as for the demonstrative purposes.
