Lignocellulosic materials are plant materials such as agricultural residues forest products (hard and soft wood) and crops (switch grass, Salix). The materials are not only cheap but are also readily available all year with little or no interference with food production chain. However, strict policies need to be developed for the management agricultural produce. This will reduce competition between biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas), chemicals and food (Kumar, Barrett, Delwiche and Stroeve, 2009, Guo, Fang, Xu and Smith, 2012). Over the years, biomass derived fuels has been inadequately investigated due to factors that affect pretreatments and hydrolysis of biomass industrially. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass play major process in the production of bioethanol. It involves the breakdown of the rigid structure of lignocellulose for the release of lignin, hemicelluloses and cellulosic polymers within the biomass.

Governments are setting challenging targets to increase the production of energy and transport fuel from sustainable sources. The emphasis is increasingly on renewable sources including wind, solar, geothermal, biomass based biofuel, photovoltaics or energy recovery from waste. What are the environmental consequences of adopting these other sources? How do these various sources compare to each other? Life Cycle Assessment of Renewable Energy Sources tries to answer these questions based on the universally adopted method of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). This book introduces the concept and importance of LCA in the framework of renewable energy sources and discusses the key issues in conducting their LCA. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of LCA for some of the most common bioenergy sources such as agricultural production systems for biogas and bioethanol, biogas from grass, biodiesel from palm oil, biodiesel from used cooking oil and animal fat, Jatropha biodiesel, lignocellulosic bioethanol, ethanol from cassava and sugarcane molasses, residential photovoltaic systems, wind energy, microalgal biodiesel, biohydrogen and biomethane. Through real examples, the versatility of LCA is well emphasized. Written by experts all over the globe, the book is a cornucopia of information on LCA of bioenergy systems and provides a platform for stimulation of new ideas and thoughts. The book is targeted at practitioners of LCA and will become a useful tool for researchers working on different aspects of bioenergy.

This book presents a review and in-depth analyses of improved biotechnological processes emphasizing critical aspects and challenges of lignocellulosic biomass conversion into biofuels and value-added products especially using extremophiles and recombinant microorganisms. The book specifically comprises extremophilic production of liquid and gaseous biofuels (bioethanol, biobutanol, biodiesel, biohydrogen, and biogas) as well as value added products (e.g. single cell protein, hydrocarbons, lipids, exopolysaccharides, and polyhydroxyalkanoates). The book also provides the knowledge on how to develop safe, more efficient, sustainable, and economical integrated processes for enhanced conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks to liquid and gaseous biofuels. Finally the book describes how to perform the techno-economical and life-cycle assessments of new integrated processes involving extremophiles. These modeling exercises are critical in addressing any deficiencies associated with the demonstration of an integrated biofuels and value-added products production process at pilot scale as well as demonstration on the commercialization scale.

The book describes how plant biomass can be used as renewable feedstock for producing and further processing various products. Particular attention is given to microbial processes both for the digestion of biomass and the synthesis of platform chemicals, biofuels and secondary products.Topics covered include: new metabolic pathways of microbes living on green plants and in silage, using lignocellulosic hydrolysates for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates, fungi such as Penicillium as host for the production of heterologous proteins and enzymes, bioconversion of sugar hydrolysates into lipids, production of succinic acid, lactones, lactic acid and organic lactates using different bacteria species, cellulose hydrolyzing bacteria in the production of biogas from plant biomass, and isoprenoid compounds in engineered microbes.
