Bioconversion of Cellulosic Wastes into a Valua...

Cellulosic wastes could be turned into several value-added products through bioconversion. This work examined four practical ways of transforming the vast amount of cellulosic wastes in our environment into a valuable resource. Being a natural habitat of cell-wall hydrolyzing organisms, cellulosic wastes are good sources of viable cellulolytic organisms. These are organisms that produce enzymes that degrade plant cell-wall polymers. The wastes can therefore serve as a source of low-cost fermentation substrates for producing industrial enzymes needed for the saccharification of cellulosic materials. It could also be used as cheap carbon and energy source for selective media used in cultivating cellulolytic organisms. Such uses will undoubtedly reduce the cost microbial media and also the production cost of cellulolytic enzymes. The waste cellulosic materials can also be enzymatically hydrolyzed into simple sugars using cellulolytic enzymes such as cellulases and xylanases. Hydrolysis of plant cell wall polysaccharides into simple sugars is the primary step needed for the conversion of cellulosic materials into bulk chemicals such as ethanol and biogas.

Fossil fuels that can be accessed economically are running out due to stress upon usage of oil, coal, and natural gas for long time and increasing in the population earth. So, new fuel resources have to be created to face the limitations of traditional fuel. Different marine biomass have been converted to usable energy forms. For instance, many microorganisms including: microalgae, yeast, bacteria and fungi have ability to accumulate neutral lipids under specific cultivation conditions. Microbial lipids contain high fractions of poly-unsaturated fatty acids and have the potential to serve as a source of significant quantities of transportation fuels. In addition, some algae (microalgae and macroalgae) were reported to have high contents of carbohydrate that can be used as substrates for renewable biofuel such as:bioalcohols, biodiesel, biogas and biohydrogen. Production of fuel from marine biomass provides advantage over that produced from agro-based raw materials. Liquid, gaseous or solid biofuels hold great promise to deliver an increasing share of the energy required to power a new global green economy.

Paddy straw is one of the most abundant lignocellulosic wastes on the earth. The organic matter of paddy straw can be degraded by the sequential action of hydrolytic, acetogenic and methanogenic bacteria to produce biogas. But, lignin and silica are the main deterrents of microbial action on cellulose/hemi-cellulose component of paddy straw. Thus, for efficient utilization of paddy straw, pretreatment is very essential. This study is, therefore, aimed at comparing chemical, biological and combined (chemical+biological) pretreatment of paddy straw to analyze their potential in increasing paddy straw digestibility and biogas production. Chemical pretreatment proved to be better than the biological and combined pretreatment. Amongst the different chemical pretreatments, 4% NaOH and 4% Na2CO3 with 60 min microwave irradiation showed a profound increase in paddy straw digestibility with more than 85% silica removal and a respective increase of 60.9% and 54.4% in biogas production as compared to the untreated paddy straw.

The finite nature of fossil fuel resource has made it imperative that alternative, renewable energy sources be explored. Anaerobic digestion from complex feedstock provides that necessary technology that not only supplement fossil fuel requirement but also, help sustain efficient waste management practice. For effective use of complex feedstock for biogas production kinetic models are valuable pre-requisites. "The simpler the Better" is a usual key phrase in model development. This text book provides an alternative, attractive approach to modeling biogas production from complex feedstock using very little input parameters. FEATURES OF TEXTBOOK - Provides a simplified approach to characterizing complex feedstock biodegradability using simple models - Shows how microbial population participating in anaerobic digestion can undergo cooperativity. - Provides a simplified technique for sizing reactors used in anaerobic digestion process using biogas yield.
