Since many years, Pakistan is facing the difficulties of energy shortage. Each year government is paying more than 14 billion US dollars on crude oil to complete the energy breach. Energy requirement is rising speedily however use of renewable energy is not sufficient to meet required need. In this book, the potential of biogas production and purification techniques are reviewed for power generation applications. Up to 2.5 KWh energy could be produced by 1 cubic meter of bio-gas. In the livestock sector, there is 4% growth rate in Pakistan on annual basis. The yearly growing rate of livestock sector is 4% in Pakistan and its manure can yield 35.5 GWh of electric energy daily. Energy crisis can be sorted by efficiently using bio-gas up-gradation as an alternative energy source. Different techniques of biogas purification for all the applications designed for natural gas were studied and reported in this book. Biogas purification experiments were conducted using chemical absorption technique on a pilot plant of biogas. The upgraded biogas could be utilized for the purpose of Cooking, Heating, Lightening (gas lamp), Electricity (generator) and Bio fertilizer.

In this study, a solar PV-biogas hybrid power system for electrification is designed for Mankramso community located in the Offinso-North district in Ghana. The daily electric load demand in Mankramso community was estimated at 262.05 kWh/d, for 400 households, school, health clinic, commercial loads (flour mills, cold store, and small businesses), church buildings and streetlights. Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) software was used to perform technical, economic and greenhouse gas emission analysis of the hybrid power system. The findings show that the system configuration which comprises of 18.6 kW of PV panels, 45 kW of biogas generator, 62 kWh of battery storage and 15.7 kW of converter is the most optimal hybrid power system configuration to meet the daily electric load. This optimal hybrid power system had a levilized cost of energy (LCOE) of US$ 0.188/kWh with an initial capital cost of US$ 102,247. This LCOE is only 10.6% higher than current LCOE (US$ 0.17/kWh) for residential tariffs in Ghana at the time of this study.

The transformation of the power supply towards renewable energy (RE) sources will depend on a large scale of fluctuating RE sources, primarily of wind energy and photovoltaics. However, the variable power generation of these renewable sources will lead to an increased need of flexible power producers in order to balance differences between energy generation and consumption. Among the different types of RE sources, biogas plants have the advantage that their input biomass and the produced biogas can be stored and electricity can consequently be generated on demand. Since electricity from biogas has not been used to balance fluctuations of intermittent RE in the past, new concepts are required. These concepts should be able to meet the requirements of highly renewable electricity systems and to supply biogas according to the varying demand for long-and short-term balance power generation. In this regard, this thesis focused on the identification of biogas plant concepts for flexible power generation, as well as on ranking them regarding their economic and life cycle performance.

Biogas plants become more flexible, scheduling their power generation with respect to market prices. For this purpose the electrical capacity of power units is extended to convert the continuously produced gas as well as the gas held in storage. This work has shown how gas plants with extended capacity located at a gas production site can be analyzed on the basis of unit commitment. Mixed integer linear programs (MILP) have been developed for the unit commitment of such plants in different use cases. The models developed consider gas plants at a gas production site participating in German power markets, switching between static and variable gas supply, providing secondary and tertiary control reserve, and claiming the German market and flexibility premium. The models can be applied to plan daily schedules for the operation of these gas plants. Furthermore, the models can be applied to analyze the benefits of extending the electrical or storage capacity of gas plants located at a gas production site. The models calculate the optimized gross income that can be applied as cash flow for determining the net present value (NPV) of investments in extended electrical and storage capacity.
