The present work is a study of possibilities in producing biogas from sugar beet pulp. The sugar beet pulp is a relative efficient substrate. Biogas yield obtained from it reaches 584 m3/ ton of oDM. Moreover, the methane content in biogas ranges from 50 to 55%. This guideline is based on sugar factory located in Poland. The above mentioned factory plan to use their own by- products, which are sugar beet pulp, beet roots and molasses. The biogas plant is to have capacity of 1.55 MW. Very important factors in present study are economical issues. In order to build a plant it is needed to calculate foundations, materials, miscellaneous and engineering costs. Overall cost of biogas plant is about 5 mln Euros. Annual expenses, outcomes and incomes are calculated in present study. The main reason of biogas plant is producing and selling thermal and electric energy. In case of building such a big undertaking a bank loan can be needed. The bank loan is explained on this example. Total sums of loans and bank interests as well as the investment payback time are presented in this book.

Calotropis a laticiferous xerophyte, is a potential source of biogas with the following features: a perennial shrub, distributed in the tropical and subtropical areas in all types of soils and environmental conditions, requiring no cultivation practices and not grazed by animals. Inspite of all these advantages, the toxic secondary metabolites were feared to be the hindrance for utilizing the biogas residue as manure. Hence, the reduction of toxicity during biomethanation was assessed in this study. For the assessment, the qty of biogas generated, phytochemical changes and macronutrients during biomethanation, natural bacterial population in the rhizoplane and rhizosphere, antagonistic activity of Calotropis on the rhizosphere bacteria and the reduction of some toxic secondary metabolites were analyzed. When Calotropis biomass was used as a substrate for biomethanation, quick initiation, prolonged generation and higher production of biogas occurred. Hence, Calotropis biomass can be used as a source of biogas to solve the energy crisis. To manage the fertilizer demand, the fermented residue with rich plant macronutrients and reduced toxins can be safely used as manure.

Declining viability of biogas production followed by a stagnation of dissemination of biogas plants calls for new repowering measures as increased amounts of storable energy sources from biomass are required for providing a smooth integration of fluctuating renewable energy sources in the electricity market in future.The implementation of biogas microgrid concepts as a repowering measure allows for a combination of organizational and technological efficiency increase as a result of decoupling of biogas production from utilization.The first objective of the present work is the development of a tool for techno-economic assessment of biogas microgrid configurations .The second objective of the work is the application of the tool for assessing the concepts’ potential for efficiency increase based on its unique features: gas storage and gas transport. These features were assessed for the two most promising biogas utilization pathways being bio-methane production and flexible electricity generation from biogas.The tool is an Excel© based model where biogas microgrid relevant processes such as drying, desulphurization, compression but also the upward and downward processes of biogas production such as biomass transport and electricity generation/methanization are described with mathematical-physical equations. Based on the latter, calculations related to energetic performance and storage capacity are preformed. The economic assessment is based on the annuity method .The fixed costs of the biogas microgrid components are expressed as functions of scale (capacity).The techno-economic calculations are preformed in three modules. The modularity of the tool allows for flexible adjustment of selected biogas microgrid configurations to various local conditions. Consequently the configuration can vary in following parameters: (a) length, (b) substrate type, (c) number and (d) capacity of connected biogas plants, (e) grid structure and (f) biogas utilization pathway.
