The interest in alternative municipal solid waste management strategies will likely intensify because its production continues to grow, while the disposal capacity via landfilling and incineration is disminishing. Anaerobic digestion has been used as a suitable treatment for organic wastes, including the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. Two residual effluents are produced: biogas, which can be used as an energy source, and a liquid effluent which could be used as a soil conditioner. The parameters employed, such as the percentage of COD removal, the concentration of volatile fatty acids and the amount and composition of biogas generated in the process, are not always representative of the composition and physiological state of biomass. This book, therefore, provides a new study about the concentration of principal groups of microorganisms involved in anaerobic depuration during start-up and stabilization of a thermophilic-dry anaerobic reactor by FISH. The analysis should be especially useful to professionals in Environmental Technologies and Microbiology fields, or anyone else who may be interesting in Environment Conservation

The book Analysis of a Commercial Thermophilic Biogas Plant is a product of a research that identified biodegradable waste materials like domestic/municipal effluence as economically viable alternative source of energy. The proposed Commercial biogas plant was mathematically modeled for urban area clean energy requirement. The capacity of the plant was estimated for a given cycle of operation. A nominal 1500m3 power gas plant was studied characteristically and its performance efficiency evaluated. It was observed that the rate of biogas production is a function of the reactor temperature, pH, substrate concentration, rate of degradation of biomass, and the accumulation of matter in the system due to bacteria growth.

Solar thermal heating of the anaerobic digester system can sustainably uphold the digester operation temperatures in the thermophilic range in the tropics throughout the year. Though Solar hearting has already been used in digester systems, it has mainly been utilized to raise temperatures form the psychrophilic to mesophilic range. This book gives an extensive literature on biogas potential and production of various feedstocks and design adn sizing approcah for anaerobic digester systems.
